Several construction projects underway, some near completion, others are about to begin.

Director of Public Works Wayne Carl gave some updates on some projects going on around the City of Galesburg. The sidewalks on the east side of Cherry Street from Main to Simmons has been poured along with new curb and gutter.

Crews are getting ready to start on the west side replacing the sidewalk, curb and gutter.

Once Cherry Street is completed, the west side of Prairie Street from Main to Ferris will get a new sidewalk, curb and gutter followed by roadway resurfacing.

There is about a week and a half of work left on the Park Plaza project and the building at 120 East Main.

“The roof was pretty bad,” Carl tells WGIL. “It was leaking. So this is nice, we have a brand new roof on the whole building. That wall has been repaired on the east side, but also, on the west side and on the south side. So that building is in really good shape now. It can be reused now. Hopefully, somebody will be interested in it in the near future. It’s about 15,000 square foot building (with) three stories. It’s in really good shape.”

Carl says next will be landscaping work and by the end of June, it’ll be completed.

Some resurfacing work will get underway soon on Broad Street from Fremont to the north of Park Lane as well as resurfacing work on Bandy, Daniel Drive, and Swing Boulevard.

A road reconstruction on Phillips Street from Main to North should begin in July – that brick street is being converted back to concrete.

Prep work has restarted on North Academy Street from the train tracks to North Street. Bricks should get laid next week and should be completed in three weeks.

A much-needed new Street Division Building is about to begin. “Where the Street Division building is located on South Henderson Street, right now we have a big salt building down there,” Carl said. “It’s a long, metal building there and we’re going to redo that and put some offices for the Street Division and move most of the Street Division over into that long building so they can store all of their vehicles inside. That contract will start next week with a local contractor Hine Construction.”

Another big project is a full reconstruct of South Seminary Street from Berrien to 5th.

That project will be done in stages – with new sidewalks, curb and gutter, and a water main. It’s slated to begin at the end of July into early August and should be completed in July next year.

Finally, a big upcoming project that still a couple of years from getting underway is Route 150 from east of the Sibley Underpass to Grand Avenue and then all the way down Grand Avenue.

That project will be a total reconstruct with new sidewalks, curb and gutter, and resurfacing.

Carl says the project will take a year and a half to complete – similar to the Henderson Street project years ago. Bids will go out on that project in 2022.
